HISCO-1 trends

Different views into the title distribution across KB and DN grouped by the first digit of the jobtitles’ HISCO code

KB-stacked-lines - shows the absolute and relative (to digitized pages) hits for all HISCO-1 across all newspapers as stacked areas.

DN-stacked-lines - shows the absolute and relative (to digitized pages) hits for all HISCO-1 in Dagens Nyheter as stacked areas.

Unique titles - timelines of the number of unique (standardised) jobtitles found in the data. Divided into individual plots for KB (all news papers) and Dagens Nyheter. The hits are in turn separated into three lines depending on which (binary) gender the title was associated with according to the SwePop extract.

Gendered

Different views into the gender-distribution of advertised jobs.

Timelines - KB - shows the absolute and relative (to digitized pages) number of hits for jobtitles in the entire database, aggregated by which genderthey are associated with.

Timelines - DN - shows the absolute and relative (to digitized pages) number of hits for jobtitles found in Dagens Nyheter, aggregated by which genderthey are associated with.

Treemap - Is a tool for exploring the titles, and their frequency for the period 1850-1920. The size of each rectangle i proportional to the number of hits for that jobtitle, the colour is determined by the gender associated with the title.

The first treemap is based on all newspapers (KB) and the latter on Dagens Nyheter only.

Jobtitle Tables

Tabular views into the underlying data. These tables are interactive: searchable and sortable.

Most common KB - tabulates all titles found across all newspaper, alongside alongside their associated gender, the total number of times it was found sum(counts) and its highest relative frequency max(rel).

Most common DN - tabulates all titles found in DN, alongside their associated gender, the total number of times it was found sum(counts) and its highest relative frequency max(rel).

Genders - shows all titles targeted by this pilot.

About

The following visualisations are part of a pilot project for research on the economic history of youth jobs in Sweden, and as they are highly preliminary. The underlying data is gathered from the Swedish National Library’s newspaper database in combination with jobtitles, and spelling variations thereof, from HISCO.

In order to narrow down the search from all text to adverts we limited the queries to titles appearing within 5 words of “SÖKES”, “PLATS”, “ERHÅLLES”. While this narrows down the results a lot, the number of hits is still based on page-level – if a title is advertised several times on the same page, it only counts once.

1906 - is marked on all time-series plots. Its imporance relates to the contents of the database and the underlying digitization process. The number of digitized pages falls sharply for material published after 1906, which poses limitations on the conclusions we can draw from this data.
